THE TRUE SPIRIT OF THE SEASON
What appeals so deeply to so many about Christmas? Why is it the single most widely celebrated holiday on human calendars? The idea of a divine birth, a savior born to bring healing, comfort and peace to us all is certainly an appealing theme, whatever our religious beliefs may be. The rituals of singing, decorating and giving provide a much needed pause in lives that otherwise may lack all three of these healing practices. I for one really like the practice adopted in many cities of leaving decorative lighting on trees and buildings, all year long. I have a few friends who secretly listen to Christmas music in the spring, summer and fall. The joy of giving has fortunately never been reserved as a seasonal activity alone. Countries at war call a cease-fire in battle zones during Christmas, yet there are many who are working toward peace all over the planet, throughout each year. Could it be that the spirit of Christmas is growing in human consciousness?
I personally know a Scrooge or two, and probably many of you do as well. Recently, I experienced the joy of seeing one of these modern-day Scrooges complete his story, and become transformed. He had a personal breakthrough while watching one of the movie versions of old Ebeneezer’s spiritual awakening. Now, he and his little boy regularly buy bags of burgers and hand them out to the folks living under bridges in the inner city where they live. Watch for the spirit of Christmas growing and expanding in your life. Become a part of this trend yourself. Step outside your comfort zone, and discover the wonderful person you really are.
