Placebo And The Power Of Belief

A senior research executive in the pharmaceutical industry once said to me, "Bill, every year, we spend billions of dollars trying to find medications that perform better that the placebo." This is a powerful statement about the power of human belief, trust and optimism. The only reason that a placebo helps at all is that the person taking it believes that it will help. Granted, part of the strength of those effects come from the belief in the power of medication to heal, but it is testimony to the power of belief, nonetheless. So, what does that tell us?

It tells us just how important it is that we our body/mind to heal itself, and in the integrity and wisdom of our health care providers. In addition, we need to believe in ourselves to make the best decisions in choosing from our many health care options. If you also have a spiritual faith that sustains and uplifts you, then that's all the better. Practice your Goodfinding journaling process, to keep your gratitude, appreciation and optimism strong!

Make Money, Do Good

This is the new corporate motto for many successful companies. In this MSNBC article, you will read about 70 chief executives that met in New York on February 28, 2011 at a philanthropy conference. Bill Green, chairman of Accenture, who spoke at the conference about maximizing profit and improving society, said, "Once you understand the impact you can have ... then you are on mission, then it becomes spiritual, it becomes part of the DNA of the company."  And this is not just a matter of check writing. Shelly Lazarus, chairwoman of Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide, said at the conference, "Doing the right thing...actually drives revenue."

In this time of skepticism regarding big business, this is a refreshing piece of news. If these executives had been caught "with their hand in the till," they would have made headlines. Remember, the big picture of what is really going on in the world is not in the headlines. Like these executives quietly going about doing the right thing on a very large scale, there are many others all over the planet right now, quietly doing their part to make the world better for all of us. Believe in them, believe in yourself, believe in us.

Good Giving, Fun Science & Fun!

Fortunately, there are many ways to help those in need like our neighbors in Japan. I really like Shelter Box, because of how clear and straight-forward it is. In their own words, they are "an international disaster relief charity that delivers emergency shelter, warmth and dignity to people affected by disaster worldwide." Find out "what's in the box" in this short video, or learn more with this longer video. I also like this video on how social media can help those in need. Did you know that science can be fun? It can, as you will see in these videos showing how hot the sun really is and how much human energy it takes to power one shower. While you're in the fun learning mode, watch this RadioLab video on Parabolas--they show up everywhere!

Now let's relax, have fun and get inspired. Start with this positive, relaxing video produced by creators of The Secret. Now smile at puppy love, and get inspired to dance with the 103 year old who loves to polka! Now watch a 16 year old guitar prodigy playing Vivaldi, a laughing baby and a flight to nowhere that helps autistic children fly. If you watched even half of these videos, your good heart is beating more regularly, and your immune system is working better--thank you from you!
