 Abe Lincoln's Emotional Intelligence

First seen as a third-rate country lawyer with poor grammar and no political savvy, Abraham Lincoln was strongly criticized as he embarked on his journey to become one of the most respected leaders of all time. In Time (July 4, 2005) Doris Goodwin suggests that it was his emotional strengths of empathy, humor, magnanimity, generosity of spirit, perspective, self-control, sense of balance and social conscience that helped him to successfully navigate some of the stormiest waters in the history of our nation. These are the earmarks of emotional intelligence, and are becoming known as essential qualities for the development of effective leadership skills. Why are we talking about leadership in a GOODFINDING newsletter? Because if you are, or decide to become a GOODFINDER, you will emerge as a leader among your friends, or within your family or organization. If in no other way, you will be leading by example, which is particularly significant when we consider the words of Albert Einstein, "Example is not the main thing in influencing others. It is the only thing." Lincoln and Einstein were definitely GOODFINDERS in their own rite, and we do well to follow their example for inspiration as we strive to fulfill our life purpose. Read 99% Inspiration by Lance Secretan to find more examples of greatness in leadership and GOODFINDING. If you feel inspired to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina, go to Network for Good to find what good you can do.

 Financial Health Emotional Wealth

"Improving the financial literacy of humanity" is the mission statement of Robert Kiyosaki's educational company CashFlow Technologies. As the author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad and many other excellent books and programs you can find at richdad.com, Kiyosaki teaches how to reach financial freedom by making your money work for you. It has occured to me that this is not only a key to financial freedom, but it actually sets you free to fulfill your life purpose and live in complete alignment with your valuesLearn more about this and The Myth of Retirement in our new CD program entitled Financial Health Emotional Wealth. You may also be interested in these brief commentaries on the same subject: Closing the GapLove is Good Business and Wealth in Motion. So what about the "emotional wealth" part? Emotional wealth is like financial freedom--it means you have such healthy beliefs, behavior patterns and lifestyle that you have positive emotional energy flowing through you most of the time. Read about The Economics of Emotional Energy and learn how you can increase your emotional assets and lower your emotional liabilities.  What Exactly is GOODFINDING?

GOODFINDING is the art and skill of focusing your thoughts, feelings and actions on the good within you and in the world around you. GOODFINDING reveals the gift in your problems, the blessings within crises, and the strength and wisdom that can be derived from illness. A GOODFINDER is a person who consistently practices GOODFINDING. GOODFINDING is good brain exercise, and could actually help prevent Alzheimer's Disease. As it also builds faith and optimism, GOODFINDING strengthens your immune system, meaning you will get sick less often and recover more quickly when you are sick if you learn and practice this simple skill. For more information about the connection of faith and optimism with the immune system, read Herbert Benson, M.D.'s book Timeless Healing. Twice a month, Dr. DeFoore does a two hour talk at Cooper Aerobics Center entitled GOODFINDING: Optimizing Your Aptitude for Health and Happiness, and you can hear this live presentation on our new CD program with the same name.  Add 7.5 Years to your life!

Your attitude about aging can lengthen your life. In an article entitled, "Longevity Increased by Positive Self-Perceptions of Aging", Yale researcher Dr. Becca Levy found that a positive perception of aging added 7.5 years to the life of the subjects studied. These effects on longevity are greater than those related to body mass, exercise and smoking. Aging is living! Embrace your aging process, and decide right now to do it with grace, style and enthusiasm. Create a positive vision of yourself 5, 10 or 20 years down the road, and revisit that vision daily. Also read here about Elegant Aging.

 Expand Your Heart Field

Your heart has a mind of its own. Read The Resonant Heart to learn about the powerful electromagnetic field that your heart produces, and how you can strengthen it. You will also discover how your heart field affects the "social fields" you are a part of. This article is written by Rollin McCraty, Ph.D., director of research at the Institute of Heart Math. Learn more at heartmath.org. Right now, try breathing love into your heart, then breath love out through your solar plexus. Think about those you love while you do this, and smile. You just did yourself and the world a whole lot of good!
